Although New York Fashion Week is now long over, and we still have a few months to go before Summer, let’s be real – is there ever a wrong time to indulge our shopping habit? (hint: the answer is no!)
As we celebrate Women's History Month, off the heels of Black History month, we're giving the spotlight to Black women fashion designers who have been making contributions to the fashion industry, challenging norms and traditional standards and experimenting with an array of techniques, colours and patterns. From bourgeoning independent labels to well-established brands, we can’t overstate that supporting Black designers not only contributes to economic empowerment within the Black community but also safeguards a space for Black creatives to thrive and feel confident about their craft.
That being said, we’ve compiled a list of 10 Black-owned clothing brands from around the world to have on your radar this year!
Hanifa
Congolese designer, Anifa Mvuemba, has made her name in the fashion industry as the founder of Hanifa, an independent Black brand committed to inclusivity, representation and creating designs for women, without limits. Her clothing has been worn by Beyoncé, Tracee Ellis Ross and Issa Rae. Last year Hanifa officially debuted its bridal collection.
Lisa Faye Silks
Trinidadian-based Lisa Faye Silks, founded by Lisa Faye, features 100% hand-dyed silk clothing. Her colorful collections, inspired by a “carefree Caribbean elegance”, boast one-of-a-kind pieces adorned with distinct patterns, and include kaftans, dresses, jumpsuits, and pants.
CASACAE
Committed to sustainable and ethical products, CASACAE includes collections that feature intricate designs on hand-dyed fabric and hand-crafted materials. These unique pieces are created by “local artisans across Africa with expertise in both traditional and contemporary design techniques.”
Re Ona
Founded by sisters Christina and Philiscia Abayomi, Re Ona exists at the intersection of luxury and minimalist. With timeless and versatile pieces that are effortlessly fashionable, this brand is giving us neutral tones that can be worn in any season.
Fe Noel
With a love for travel and penchant for bold prints, Brooklyn-based Grenadian designer, Felisha “Fe” Noel, exudes Caribbean pride through each of her creations. In 2023, the brand opened a boutique in Brooklyn in honor of its 10-year anniversary, with a backyard that will be used for community events.
