Kandi Burruss has donned many hats – from R&B royalty and reality tv icon to serial entrepreneur and now Broadway record-breaker - continuing to prove time and again that anything is possible.
In August 2024, it was announced that Kandi, former Real Housewives of Atlanta star, would join the production team for Broadway’s Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal. Set in 2028, this production is unlike any other, offering a modern twist to Shakespeare’s timeless tale of jealousy, tragedy and revenge.
"It's starring Denzel Washington… The clothes are modern. The delivery feels real and passionate. You can see yourself in it — even though they're still using Shakespeare's words." – Kandi Burruss, Waymaker Journal
Although it only opened on Sunday, March 23, 2025, Othello has already broken records by becoming the highest-grossing play in Broadway’s history. Grossing $2.8 million in its first seven shows, it has surpassed the previous record held by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and continues to play at full capacity. This means that Kandi Burruss has officially become the highest-grossing Black female Broadway producer – let that sink in!
This isn’t Kandi’s first opening night on Broadway, though – she first produced Thoughts of a Colored Man in 2021, followed by a Tony-nominated revival of August Wilson’s classic, The Piano Lesson, starring Denzel’s son, John David Washington, and later, The Wiz.
Othello is currently playing at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in NYC. Don’t wait to get your tickets, as the show has a limited run time and is scheduled to close on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
