Few figures in the beauty industry carry the same cultural weight as Dame Pat McGrath. Widely regarded as one of the most influential makeup artists of all time, her work has redefined industry standards and set global beauty trends. For over 25 years, she has consistently raised the bar. And, in 2015, she made waves when she launched Pat McGrath Labs.
The debut product was a limited edition gold, multipurpose pigment, which sold out 1,000 units from the website in six minutes. That moment set the tone for the brand’s future.
What really set the brand apart was its commitment to inclusivity and representation from day one. “I just remember as almost a child shopping in department stores and seeing all of these beautiful colors and then they never worked on my skin, or they were too bruise-y on pale skin,” said Pat. So, from its inception, she has been intentional about working with, and representing, all skin tones so that no one feels left out.
Valued at more than $1 billion in 2018, the powerhouse brand has experienced a few rocky years with high turnover in its leadership, in addition to layoffs. In January 2026, the brand filed a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition to “simplify its capital structure, reduce its debt load and unlock the potential of this brand.” Although news of the filing initially raised concerns about the future of the brand, founder Pat McGrath explained that this filing was intended to give the company a reset, as they get back on track to provide the highest quality makeup to the marketplace. She made clear that this wasn’t the end.
Less than one month after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the iconic beauty brand secured $30 million in new financing from investment firm GDA Luma, with an immediate $10 million injection to assist the company in keeping operations steady during restructuring, and while paying off its debts. A further commitment of at least $20 million once the brand exits restructuring was also made.
As of April 2026, the brand emerged from bankruptcy with GDA Luma as its majority owner.
“Creating beauty that moves people has been my life’s work and that never stops. I will continue pushing boundaries in my role alongside GDA Luma, and I look forward to the future.” - Founder Dame Pat McGrath
While Path McGrath will continue in her role as chief creative officer, both GDA Luma and Pat McGrath have have expressed their commitment to working closely with each other in this new era to strengthen operational performance and inject new creative energy and commercial focus into the business.
